Mine-Carts

As most of you will know, dungeons can take many forms; natural caverns, the nest complexes of giant insects, crypts/tombs, sewers, catacombs under a city, castles, temples and much much more besides. But one of the most commonly recurring types are probably mines – from the mines-cities of Dwarven civilisations to the less spectacular mine tunnels of humans and other races. Also pretty much all underground complexes have to be tunnelled out when they are first made so mining paraphernalia can often be found in other dungeon types too, especially if the dungeon in question is still under construction or being extended.
It occurs to me that this introduction really needs to be tapered to a point before it gets too long – Mine-Carts. I'm making Mine-Carts for my dungeon set-ups.

Here's some Work-In-Progress pictures and then I'll ramble on a bit more after the pictures

^ The wheels and … is 'chassis' the right word? Are made from some cheap imitation Lego bits, I'm in the process of adding some extra bits from model kits for details

^ I used a cavalry base as the starting point for the 'bucket' bit of the cart – not only do the sloping  base-edges provided a perfect angle for the sides of the Mine-Cart, but since I'm planning to run at least 1 adventure in which the adventurers will get to ride in Mine-Carts the dimensions of the  cavalry base will allow for 2 human size miniatures to be placed inside. The sides and floor of the 'bucket' are made from coffee-stirrers.

^ A flat not-quite-lego piece was glued to the bottom of the 'bucket' to so it could be easily fixed to the 'chassis'.

^ The assembled Mine-Cart so far, at the moment I'm looking for some hooks to add to the back and front

I'm going to make 3 more Mine-Carts and maybe a small steam engine (inspired by the ones in Fable II and III) to pull them. Messy is also working on a pump-wagon as an alternative way to pull the carts along.
I will also be needing to make some track for the Mine-Carts to run on and I've got some other mining equipment in the works which will allow me to my dungeon set-ups a mine theme

Re: Mine-Carts

Ingeniously simple and clever, with a very nice result. I love the fact that you can add two standard minis inside the cart ... fantastic.

Thank you

I now have some pictures of this Mine-Cart painted to show you ...

^A Cleric and a Barbarian demonstrating that 2 human sized figures fit rather nicely in the cart

^and a bit of silliness - 3 Goblins in the Mine-cart, being pulled around by a Minotaur

Very nice, pretty understated piece but I can see it being a bit of a laugh in game.

This awesome. I had thought of doing something similar but instead of lego use a HO scale wheel section from a train car so you could actually sections of HO scale train track for it to roll on. Of course you would to paint the tracks up to fit the theme.

Yes, originally I had planned to use HO scale coal-carts, which are exactly the right size to hold 2 28mm miniatures - but once I got to the train shop I found the details were too fine and not pseudo-medieval enough for what I wanted (also they're rather costly). So once I'd found the right wheels I build this in a much more chunky and rough and ready aesthetic. I've of course got to scratch build my own tracks to fit these now ...

As I remember there was some lego track, seem to remember it being at least similar gauge to the width of the standard wheel width...but that might just be my brain...and who knows what it'd cost...
