Manticore

“Do not caress the lonely Manticore. Do not unless your hand is gloved.
Feeling betrayed, feeling unloved, so lost he is in cabalistic dreams
he often bites the hand he really meant to kiss”
 - Gian Carlo Menotti's 'The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore'

Yea I thought I'd start with a mildly irrelevant quote like some authors do at the start of a chapter

This Manticore is a based and re-painted Monsters In My Pocket figure, the one bit of conversion work I did on this miniature was to replace the original tail-tip with the blade of a Citadel Night Goblin's dagger to create the tail-spike - looking back, I could have used a scorpion stinger tail from an old Citadel Chaos Spawn I had lying around to give it a more 'traditional' Manticore tail, but I think it actually looks better this way and makes for a more convincing creature.

I started painting with an undercoat of MP Black Primer right out of the pot with no water added, it's important when painting models made of this kind of material that the undercoat is not watered down because the surface tends to repel water and causes diluted paint to form little beads or pull away from raised areas (the same goes for those of you complain that they can't paint Reaper Bones)
Next I took the rather unusual step of applying a thin layer of matt varnish over the undercoat, this was in an attempt to quell the inherent shininess of the Monster In My Pocket plastic which some how carries through the paint. This wasn't particularly necessary with the previous Monsters In My Pocket figures I've done (The Haniver Beast and Water Elemental) because they were supposed to look wet.
Once the varnish was dry I went about building up the shading by dry brushing 3 layers of red-ish browns from the Army Painters range. I used Barbarian Flesh (also from the Army Painters range) on the body, legs and face which I then shaded with Citadel Ogryn Flesh and then re-highlighted with Barbarian Flesh.
The wings and tail I picked out in P3 Skorne Red followed by a mixture of Citadel Blood Red and more Skorne Red for extra highlights, leaving the underneath of the wing membrane brown and blending the red back toward the flesh colour of the body.
I wasn't sure what to do with the creature's mane/hair but in the end I settled on painting it Citadel Vomit Brown and then giving it a wash of Citadel Baal Red which resulted in it coming out kinda ginger which I think works quite well with the rest of the colour scheme - I did briefly consider using a light-brown wash (perhaps Griphone Sepia) on the mane because the face kinda reminds me of Ozzy Osborne during the 80's in his 'Bark at the Moon' period.

^ Ozzy - Listen in awe and you'll hear him … Bark at the moon!

For the final touches Skorne Red and Baal Red picked out the tongue while keeping it quite dark , the claws and teeth were painted Citadel Kommando Khaki and highlighted with Citadel Bleached Bone and the eyes were picked out in Citadel Ruby (Ruby Ruby Ruby aaaaaahhh!) Red

Once again I'd like to give thanks to Messy for getting hold of the Monster In My Pocket figures

Really nice repaint. I see what you mean about the vague resemblence to that particular Ozzy video. Nice mixture of terrain projects for the backdrop too!

Thank you - I've got a Hydra Right Here and you should be seeing a Chimera by me some time later in the year
