I was fairly impressed just now, skim reading through The Skald's thread on bargain 3D dungeon building, but I thought should put this in a separate thread because I'm promoting one of my own products. After a long run I've taken my scrappy 3D Dungeon Blocks prototype down from Deviant Art, because I've finally released the finished product and published it on DriveThru/RPGNow. Currently the PDF is a mere $2.90 USD - although some customers will think I'm pushing it at that price for such a small PDF. ;) I'm never going to pay the rent at this rate... ;) "Dungeon Blocks" is already in use in a few places on the web, so I'm calling mine "Inked Adventures Blocks"
Review copies available upon request. No modeling skills required. Photos and diagrams: The Inked Adventures Blocks printable PDF, DriveThruRPG $2.90 / £1.80 / €2.27 http://bit.ly/IAblocks |
Since I already use your floorplans when I'm "on the road" (but I think I'm going to need a bigger tin now), I've just contributed to your rent this week and bought a set so I can '3D-ise' my portable dungeon
Great work as usual Billiam!

....... having made their way through the upper level of the goblin lair, the rescue party find the entrance to the dungeon
only to be confronted by a pair of guards After a brief skirmish, the goblins are defeated - luckily there were no sentries so they cautiously press on.... but the 'gods of the wandering monster tables' were against them! A pair of archers let loose - and miss before running away... The dwarfs give chase and follow... straight into a trap! Undaunted, the dwarfs wade in.... .. felling the goblins, but losing one of their own. They decide to see what's behind the doors rather retracing their steps..... ... and by a stroke of luck find what they came for! "Well you took yer time! now get me untied an' lets get outta here!.......... don't open that door!!!!" Something this affordable and simple to use just shouldn't be this much fun! - I've already had more than my purchase price worth out of it........ and all in a box file! Meet the new "portable dungeon"

Absolutely brilliant photos!
Very nice point-of-view in-action angles as well. Dwarves storming through! Your gluing skills are better than man as well. :) I rather like the way you've created the start to the dungeon with the steps. Can I use some of these pics on my site(s)? - will name credit. They illustrate the blocks in use perfectly. Marvelous stuff. :) |
I don't know about my "gluing skills" - I can see a couple of blocks that I need to tidy up, but to be fair, I printed off and made up a couple on the fly as I needed 'em for the game (yet another great advantage of these blocks, it only takes a couple of minutes from print to play!!).
Of course you can use any of the photo's you'd like, for whatever purpose - I'm honoured For that matter, any of my own photo's I post anywhere on the forum are there for any members to do with as they wish ( just consider them TLaTD property as it were ) I'll be posting a few more photo's after the weekend, when I'll be using the 3D blocks with some different floorplans as some characters take on another "errand" for Nicodemus

They are great, I must admit making 3d blocks are something I have thought aobut for some time with my space ones, but need to think of a simple what to do it so even i can make them. Love the tiles.

Hey Quicky. sorry for my late reply. It's just occured to me that the Tabletop Towns modular hab cubes might also work as interior walls or 3D filler between tiles.
I think Mortis worked on those, so maybe pick his brain on availability or any pointers for industrial wall textures, if you're serious about papercrafting some blocks or walls. http://www.tabletoptowns.co.uk http://the-lost-and-the-damned.664610.n2.nabble.com/Tabletop-Towns-Hab-Units-Sci-fi-Terrain-td7581229.html I still have a bottleneck of designs waiting to be finished and published and I'm working on some tavern walls (shush, at this rate, ready by 2025) - a universal design which can work as an interior and exterior, I hope. My preference is to make the walls just slightly higher than 25-28mm minis with bases so I settled on 35mm in height (1.4in appx). All other dimensions are 25mm/1in based to match with the game grid. Trial and error led to reducing all dimensions by a couple of millimetres to prevent culmilative gain in length when many boxes are put side by side (i.e. the boxes don't spill over the sacred flagstone grid). I say all this because if you wanted to make some space blocks it's pretty easy to track down some cuboid nets with tabs and stretch them to fit the dimension. Much like Lego, the 2x4 ratio is the most useful block for making walls, with gaps for doors (in this case 1inx2in at the base), however, I think the L-shaped pieces are good for delineating massive rooms by just representing the corners - ideal for battlemat gamers. |
