IG COMMENT: Sentinels

General Biakal

I really dont think i can think of a model like the sentinel. you see, its looks so fucking brilliant, and the new plastic (new ish... year old) kit is IMO easily one of the best GW do, even if you take into account they spacked up the mould and the multi laser wont fit on. and the kit is clever, versatile and fun to fit together, with perfect fit. and it looks nice.

so why not have 9 rocking the board every game? they just suck ass. the armoured sentinel looks boss to the max but is like a million points and has a life expectancy of Freddie Mercury's rent boy. the Scout one is even more vulnerable and while cheaper points wise unless your playing a tiny battle your fast attack slots have so much coller options. "shall i take 3 scout sentinels with multilasers or shall i take a valk? shall i take three armoured sentinels or take a vendetta and have change?

I dont care what the gayers on warseer (whineseer) say, Armoured Sentinels need to be a Troops choice, or like old days be part of the HQ squad. the undercosted Valk and to some extent Hellhound have made them almost an Apocalypse only choice, which makes me sad.

its not that they are bad, its just that so many other things rock your cock off harder in the same slot.

 Got Retro?

I can sort of see why tho... for those of us that take Veteran Only IG armies armoured Sentinels would make an excelent firbase support vehicle if they were cheap and numerous. many would call "Spam" on this but i say "Fuck Em"

it would be weird if they were a scoring unit too- especially as scoring units are now so important and in cover AV12 might mean bolter fire might not kill them quick enough for the all-important SM win.

But what weapons to take? well you have big choices... multilaser, autocannon, las cannon, missiles, plasmay-cannonay, sharp sticks, nukes, harsh language.....

all basically shoot vehicles. so why use a one shot las cannon which will miss? likewise with missiles. you dont get "bring it down" on these babies... plus, big zappers cost big dollars. in my very humble opinion your best off with a compromise. Autocannons get most vehicles buggered on a 3+ if your facing the right way and Eldar always fear and respect the old 4+ AP. and that also makes Orks sweat a little if you catch them right. Multilasers fire lots of Dakka and you have a good chance of hurting most things on a 5+ at least. if you have a decent amount of points on offer i would drop in an HK missile for a giggle.

IN SUMMARY-

what an awesome model. seriously. but i cant help but be a teeny but dissapointed with what they can actually do

"WAAAAGH! VROOM VROOM!!! DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA! Dead gud innit yoof?!" - typical Mekboy sales pitch

Hi Mate

Iv mentioned this before but having A sentintal army would be cool.

One of the 40k novels iv read had a sentinal army with chimera as infanty support and supply, no tank. It was a good read.

Personally I love sentinels. I think they look awesome (egg on legs version was best though).

They can be handy on the battlefield too but they have to be handled right. They're not a drednaught or a tank really, more like an extra heavy weapon squad that happens to be impervious to anything bellow strength 4 (which is pretty good compared to guardsmen!). Two sentinels with multi-lasers is about the same cost as three weapons teams with the equivelant weapons and will survive longer against the same sort of shooting. Best thing to do is try and keep them in a hull down position as much as possible, they live a lot longer, especially now that it works as a cover save!

Armoured sentinels I've not tried yet (been a while since I played IG), but they look like a waste of points. 20pts more for av12, and access to weapons you'll probably not want.

Sentinels are also great for attracting fire away from your more valuable vehicles. There's also the old trick of using them to tie up swarm enemies that are trying to charge your guardsmen, stuff like hormagaunts can't dent a sentinel but if it assaults them they have to stand there getting stomped on until a bigger 'nid comes and does something.

Yes iv done this one once when i was playing at trobridge, it was funny as i was killing only 1 at a time and their were 20 of them tied up.
Sentinels for me do get killed of too quickly.

Future plans for me using a grendal site, is to make the 3 dinosaurs in to Gatachan Sentinals equilyvants.

Game on.
