First try..

So here's my first go at painting. Mort kindly let me total one of his goblins from Heroquest, but I don't think it's come out too badly for a first go.

From my initial thoughts -
1. Needs more 'extreme' highlighting on the head
2. The eyes annoy me - may have to try and touch them up when I'm next around.
3. I'm actually quite proud of the belt buckle.

Any other constructive critisism??

Re: First try..

Well, the image is a bit small, but it looks really good.
I agree on your points. I haven't even gotten around to finishing my first miniature, but I imagine faces to be very difficult.

As I said in person it's very good - especially for your first paint job

So what are you planning on painting next?

Well, I have ordered a fair few mini's from eBay - I have found an amzing guy that ships them out the day after me ordering them. Some of them are the 'cute' kind - mouslings, but there is one fairy type one which I would like to see what I can do with the wings. Plus have a few orcs on order and just found a GW (boo hiss!!) Hobby Starter Set with paints, brush, glue and cutters in a charity shop for a tenner. All still wrapped in plastic - very excited!!

So lots of plans on the horizon....

and, while flipping through random eBay pages found a zombie chihuahua - it's so odd I may have to try that too!!!

Re: First try..

Excellent, I look forward to seeing your purchases

That starter set sounds like a good find!

What Orcs have you ordered?

Four models of orcs with weapons.

That's about as far as my knowledge stretches I'm afraid.

I'll stick pics up on the forum once they're painted.

I was rather impressed with my charity shop find I must say. Never walk past a charity shop without fully checking it. Something many many people have taught me.

Re: First try..

It's awkward sometimes, though. Old people look at some of us like we're probably getting ready to loot, pillage and burn.

Or, that's how 99% of them look at *me*, anyway.. D:

I only suggest to you to paint a little white or yellow dot on the eyes. It will looks more "alive".

Re: First try..

Ah - but you didn't have the careful eagle-eyed tutor-ship of Mortis on your first try. And I assume you started younger than me so had less patience, obsession with getting it right, etc.

And old people never look at me funny. I assume they think I'm buying this stuff for a nephew or something.

Will look into dotting the eye with yellow when I'm next back with the model. Ta for the tip!

Very nice for a first attempt, certainly a lot neater than my first few figures, actually probably as neat as I am now and I've been painting for about 18 years now

The belt buckle is very impressive, they're an absolute pain to do in my experience. I'd have personally given the skin a slightly darker wash or brighter highlights as its a little flat but that's the only criticism I can think of.

Re: First try..

Yeah - I realise the skin is a little flat. I did try to do what Mort calls 'extreme' highlighting, but for some reason it didn't take. Maybe I just didn't do it that well.   Ho hum. I'll see what happens on the next figures I try painting with. Whish at the moment are a bunch of High Elves. Should be fun!
