Face Eater Squigs

These miniatures are Broodlings from Dark Age Game 'Brood' range http://www.dark-age.com/showimage.php?id=4 (a great source of all kinds of interesting gribblies and monsters). I use them as Face Eater Squigs in my games as per 2-6 on the following table from the AHQ adventure 'Quest For Sonneklinge' first published in WD121.

Although the Brood Puds (see the link above) look much more like the 'Face Eaters' illustrated in the late Rogue Trader era Ork books, the Broodlings appealed to me much more as miniatures and I ended up buying them instead.
As you can see from the second image I based the colour scheme on the Head-Crabs from the Half Life games, which they closely resemble (give or take a leg or 4). I started with Dwarf Flesh and Vomit brown on the body and bended it out towards Red Gore and Terracotta on the legs, I then added increasing amounts of  Dwarf Flesh and Elf Flesh to the mix for the highlights. The quills and teeth I painted Graveyard Earth highlighted up through Komando Karki to bleached bone. The inside of the maws were painted with Scab Red highlighted with Red Gore and Blood Red followed by a wash of Baal Red and then a glaze of Red Ink. I then gave the body a few washes of Griffone Sepia and Ogrin Flesh and the legs a few washes of Baal Red and Delvin Mud before touching up the highlights where needed and painting the base. They were quite fun to paint and I think they came out rather nicely.

Currently these little beasties lurk around dank dungeons in the dark and leap out on unsuspecting adventurers in my fantasy campaign, but they certainly also have the potential to be used in a Sci-fi campaign where they might be found lurking on abandoned space-craft or in the tunnels of an underground scientific research facility that has recently been befallen by some kind of catastrophic disaster... so get your crowbars ready!

Seriously disturbed stuff.I assembled & painted a full size 'face hugger' from the 'Alien' films & it did not look as creepy as those head crabs. The flesh colour is spot on & that looks like blood.Just hope I never hear the Doctors say "I'm sorry, you have a case of the crabs" because I will be thinking of these mothers!I am not sure if I like the pink legs on the face eaters, but they are certainly repulsive.Fantastic explanation.Hey,you need a vomit bowl to play wargames with MortiS.
