Dwarf army

So, I've arranged a game between 2 new players this weekend.

The first player is my wife and she's chosen a dwarf army, the second is a friend and he's gone Dark Elves. I decided not to play since I'm introducing new people, so I'll just be the "rules guy".

Since you guys like minis I thought I'd upload some photographs of the 6000 points army my wife has chosen (6th edition). You'll notice the Halfling dogs of war with the archers and hot pot. Some minis are unpainted, some undercoated, some part painted and some pro painted. You'll probably recognise which are the pro ones.

If you want better pictures just say and I'll upload them. My pro friend is a total genius.

Here it is:-

Halfling archers
Ungrim, Gotrek and Felix and some slayers
Thunderers
Crossbows and artillery

Re: Dwarf army

my Lord, where do you find room to play such vast armies xD
Looks nice, but sharper pictures would be better though :)
I like the dwarves with the coloured hats that remind me of snow white's dwarves :P

Yeah, I'll take some sharper pictures later when there's better light. Since I'm not playing I'll probably do it when the game is set up to play. Might even do a battle report!

I have a dedicated games room with a 180cm long table (can be extended to 210cm or 240cm), but I think 6000 points fights well enough on a 6 x 4 table. Its a shame, my old house had a converted attic that ran the whole length of the house. Up there I build a 12 foot long table and regularly had 4 way games with 10,000 points per side.

Sorry, I actually meant 10,000 points per person. 20,000 points per side.

The last game I recall had something like 5 or 6 greater demons, 4 or 5 dragons and more war machines than you could reasonably shake a stick at (not to mention the size of the armies themselves).

I come from a wargaming background, I don't do silly little skirmishes :P

Re: Dwarf army

Just out of interest how long do your 20,000 pts per army games take? and in which edition?

Re: Dwarf army

If memory serves me correctly it would have been 4th edition when we first played a game that big (the one with the spall cards) and I believe we stopped playing at about 6th edition (which is probably why those are the books I've managed to find).

Assuming an early start to the day a game would take the best part of a day to play, I can't recall many over running into the following day (You must remember, the last time I played would've been around 9 years ago, so forgive the hazy memory).

So around a day - and compensating for breaks for meals ect? (although I guess with armies that play at the limits of practically you could take meals during the opposing side's movement phase)

do you use structured army lists or just put as many points as you can on the table up to the maximum?

PS you should give skirmish type games a try, they are a lot more tactical that you might think - every dice roll counts and you need to treat each troop as valuable

Re: Dwarf army

Oh no, its proper structured armies. X number of heroes, Y minimum core choices etc. Though I seem to recall it was something like "no more than 25% of your army can be spent on characters" in the earlier days. The 6000 point army above (for example) is limited to 5 Lords, 7 Heroes; has a minimum of 7 Core units and a maximum of 6 special and 5 rare (if I recall from last night).

Lunch we'd eat whilst playing, turns are no way as long as you might be imagine. Move a few troops, roll a few dice. Game lengths are not significantly greater than smaller games.

I've played my fair share of 2000/3000 point games, not only have I found tactics to be almost redundant, but I find the whole idea of the game silly. When armies go on the march, they have troops, not 3 units!

I guess each to their own, but I've always been a fan of more epic conflicts (which is a shame that the 15mm didn't take off, though the rules were awful). I'll be honest, even 10,000 point games don't feel like a ful size army (though certainly much more so), I've fought in LRP battles with 2000 players per side and that has come close to a battle, but even then its not the scale of most historial battles...

I think the most extreme battle we fought back in 4th Edition was at 32'000 pts/side (3 players/side).

The battlefield took up most of my buddy's living room floor.

It was fun to have done it but definitely not something that was habit forming.

Wow, that sounds epic! 10,000 used to be my staple, 20,000 the biggest. Would love to play mega games though, with enough space and time.

Re: Dwarf army

It was epic.
