Yes, I've finally gotten around to painting one of the Daleks I got last year. As I've mentioned many times before I'm not at all keen on the 'iDalek' design and these models I have are unfortunately based on the new style Daleks. However on the upside the models aren’t particularly accurate to the full-size iDaleks and some of my least favourite bits of styling have been played down (I'm going to stop myself now before I get started ranting on how badly designed the new Daleks are and just get on with talking about the miniature)
The Colour Scheme
When it came to painting, I decided to base my colour scheme on the red 'second in command' Dalek from the 1960's movies, for several reasons. First of all I didn't want to paint it as an iDalek, however I thought it would be nice to 'preserve' the colour to model (I had picked a red one to paint), another major factor was a recent purchase of a pot of Formula P3 Molten Bronze which I was looking for an opportunity to use, also having 2 metallic colours (bronze and silver) in the scheme not only helped me divide up the different areas of the Dalek more distinctly, but also helped me further distance myself from the blatantly plastic look of the iDaleks
Painting The Dalek
For the red I started with Citadel Foundation Mecrite Red, which I came to regret as it gave the areas an unwanted texture (next time I'll use Formula P3 Sanguine Base or Citadel Scab Red). I then added a layer of Skorne Red followed by a highlight of 50/50 Formula P3 Skorne Red and Citadel Blood Red. For the black/dark-grey areas such as the neck rings, plunger, eye ball and hemispheres I used a 50/50 mix of Formula P3 Iron Hull Grey and MP Black Primer, pure Iron Hull Grey for highlights and Citadel Badab Black Wash for shading. As I mentioned before the bronze parts are Formula P3 Molten Bronze, but I also highlighted it with a mix of Molten Bronze and Citadel Dwarf Bronze for extra metal-y-ness. You'll notice (in shots that show the back of the Dalek) that as well as painting the fender and shoulder-section bronze I have also painted the new style rear panel in the same way. The reason for this is that I the 'altered' rear panel is in fact one of the features of the new Daleks that I don't like, mainly because it being an integral part of the skirt adds to the 'blow-moulded plastic' look of the iDalek – so by painting it as a separate piece from the skirt I have over come that some what. The hatch in the rear panel, the arm, gun and eye-stalk were all painted Citadel Boltgun Metal and washed with Badab Black. I decided on orange for the dome-lights, because … well because Messy and Cat told me to when I couldn't decide between blue and orange. The dome-lights (which I always want to call indicators) got a base coat of Citadel Macharius Orange Foundation Paint, highlighted with Citadel Fiery Orange and then a mixture of Citadel Badmoon Yellow and Fiery Orange. Finally I used yet more Badab Black to black-line various details and sharpen-up the model a little.
Over all I see the finished model as a compromise between the new style Daleks and the classic Daleks I'd prefer to have painted. I think for the next Dalek I do I'll take a blue one and paint it in the powder-blue, grey and silver of the original TV series Daleks. I might even buy some of Heresy Miniatures 'Not-Dr Who' characters, I've been looking for an excuse to buy the Amy Pond one!
The Terrain
You've probably noticed the Dalek is surrounded by some rather nice new Sci-fi terrain, it's a set of Ainsty Castings given to my group by General Biakal, which I finished painting up just before I started work on the Dalek – I'll post more pictures and some chatter about the terrain later

^ A vehicle/robot painting competition is being run by the RVR painting group on FaceBook and since it coincided with me painting the Dalek I've decided to enter it – Here are my entry pictures (I'll post a link later so you can vote for me if you like!)
^ While looking around for pictures of the movie Daleks I came across this image of some larger scale Dalek models with some of the same pieces of Ainsty Castings terrain as I have taken my pictures with – I'm sure The Doctor would have something to say about a coincidence like this ...
