Combat Engineers?

Saw
Does anyone know if an I.G. player can field a combat engineer squad? I think in the 40K universe they refer to them as pioneer units. Any thoughts how this would work? I have the conversions started, so it would be just my luck, if it was a no go.

I was more thinking in a sapper role, with special abilities, reserved for a forward engineer unit like breeching obsticals, or even building ones, if the senerio called for it. More of a front lines, crawling through the mud with a bangalore torpedo, blowing holes in the wire, for the advancing assult forces type squad (?)
They could also be used to detect mines, or lay them, booby traps, big explosions, or building a school for poor orphans on epsilon 7 , that type of thing.

Nothing yet mate but i like the idea, when im on top of my projects im thinking of making a minesweeper tank. A domlisher, using it,s side sponsons for the arms to carry it.

I thing this was done in on old white dwarf mag.

Sounds like a cool conversion Mark, I've been tempted to make some of 'hobart's funnies' for my 15mm ww2 armies (well more just because making loads of speciallist engineering tanks would be awesome!).

As for engineer rules you could just use them as IG vets, means you can have an odd mix of weapons if you choose (melta guns and heavy flamers yum!), and you can also have the demolitions doctrine which gives them all melta bombs and one guy gets a demo charge. You could also give them the forward sentries doctrine which allows them to set snare mines (which don't really act like booby traps but I guess they vaugely represent cloesly set 'Claymore' like explosives)

Imperial armour 6 has rules for the deathkorps of kreig engineers in it but I've not read them so I can't comment on what they're like.

For general play I'd just say go with vets, no one can complain about a nice characterful twist on the standard codex unit.
