40K special characters

General Biakal
Which ones are worth the effort and which ones suck?

Re: 40K special characters

General Biakal
Of the IG special characters i only would ever bother with maybe two. First is Nork Deddog. for 55pts (almost a full guard squad however) he can really REALLY beef up your command squad if u want it to be counter assaulty. Imagine a heroic officer with storm bolter and power sword, commisar with same, veteran with same, priest tooled up, three flamers and a pissed-off ogryn. it would cost soooo much but could mangle most units and with a few meltabombs and swop a flamer for a multimelta even mighty land raiders would be sweating.

the second is Sly Marbo, one man army. i rekon he could do some real damage in the right circumstances. However most of the other IG characters seem monsterously over-priced and seem to bring little. if the HQ choices came with attendant staff too then maybe, but by having yarric your paying lots of points and losing a full command squad. thats four less heavy weapons.

thoughts?

I'm not that big on special charaters, i only use them if my opponant uses them. i prefer to use individual vet stats ie maybe one platoon With jungle stats like Gatachans or Mordians with urban warfare skills, or maybe an extra bs say on one heavy weapon attachment. or ws for a command squad.

Vet skill for one tank crew. I would like to have at least one of my converted tanks in a bog standard IG army using its proper stats.

I have also thought of a suicide bomber ie the trooper with a demo charge charging a vehicle, bunker or say a squad of terms or tyranids. The trooper has to pass a leadership test first. This man will ack alone from his parent squad.

I have also considered having a dog as a theme for my army and it doubles up a a surveyor for finding infIltrators.

i really like the ideaof having a K-9 unit! it would fit nice with my Provost Troop idea! didnt mordheim have hunting dogs? or would chaos hounds look ok?

i rekon the handler would have to be armed with a pistol only so the dog would need enough atacks to make it worth while. i wonder what its WS should be? to be honest im thinking WS2, S3 T2

awesome idea tho. and have it counting as a surveyor too- genius!

I like it mate cheers, iv been looking for dog type models but iv found nothing too apeeling yet. Further to add i was thinking of a dog handler unit, strapped with explosives, just like the russians did in the WW2. using the vehicles rear armour for damage.

Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, has been awsome in all his forms but I was disapointed to see his faithful Grot, Makari, has been left out in the 2 most recent Codices (thats the plural of Codex).

Wazdakka Gutzmek has also made a welcome return recently, as has Kaptin Badrukk and Mad Dok Grotsnik. But I would like to see more ...

it would be awsome to see Nazdreg Ug Urdgrub redone in modern Mega Armour and some nice tribal Snakebites with Zodgrod Wortsnagga and his highly trained Super Snotling wouldn't go amiss.

I'd also like to see a 40K version of GorKaMorkA's Da Krusher (Da Bionik Ork) and maybe even The Red Gobbo

I'm glad to see no futher mention Old One-eye in the new Tyranid Codex - an army of hivemind creatures having a special character always struck me as rather a stupid concept

and how about some more Necron Gods - it would be nice to see some more tombs open as the end of the galaxy draws nearer!

I would like to have a two man sniper team, one with the sniper rifle and his mate as a spotter. They would also have the infiltrate skill. these models will not dissapear if they have to move. This team can pick it's own targets, even independant charaters.  This team will have vet stats.

I always expected someone from 2000AD to call lenton and say

"erm dudes....... the name OLD ONE EYE is pretty much ours. uv stolen it from Flesh, an early 80s strip we ran what was awesome, so stop it!"

Fair play on the ork characters. in an army built around non-conformity and randomness a huge range of special characters would make a lot of sense. you literally wouldnt know which one you were going to face. mightkeep you guessing.

as for the necrons, i think the wraith and tomb spiders are amoung the best models GW have ever done. but the rank and file troops and those hover-thingies with the necron torso and the floating bodies are just so hyper gash it offends me. iv heard tell of a new codex so i assume new troop types.

i saw the enforcers models for necromunda have a cyber-mastiff model but its a bit shit. it really could bring a bit more depth to IG tho.

I'd use Farmer Maggot's dogs from the LotR range

after googling a few 40k charicter names because I was board the other night I discovered this
http://www.definition-of.com/taking+old+one-eye+to+the+optometrist

I always quite liked the Destroyers and  Heavy Destroyers although I think the Destroyer Lords where a bit odd looking.

BTW I'm doing a Necron army using alternative miniatures, any idea what you'd replace the Destroyers with?

I dunno I do like that the machine is just that, a machine, the machine is it's own crew because it's a Necron itself

well, here is the first stage of the provost troop project. farmer maggots dogs seem pretty ok.  almost to scale and pretty dynamic.

the handler has a bolt pistol to give the squad a teeny weeny bit of little close range dakka.  the full rules are below.

Pts WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
Provost Trooper 9 3 4 3 3 1 4 1 8 5+
Provost Sergeant 14 4 4 3 3 1 4 2 8 5+
Dog Handler 9 3 4 3 3 1 4 1 8 5+
Attack dog 5 3 - 3 2 1 2 1 - -

Number/squad: The provost troop consists of a Provost Sergeant and 5 Troopers.
Weapons: They are armed with either a shotgun or a las pistol and truncheon
The Provost Sergeant may ONLY have a pistol and truncheon but may upgrade to a bolt pistol for 5pts or a plasma pistol for 10pts. He may also take carapace armour at 5pts.
Options: One Trooper may be upgraded to a Dog Handler at no extra cost. He can then be given between 1-3 attack dogs at 5 pts each. He is armed with a las pistol but may upgrade to a bolt pistol for 5pts or a plasma pistol for 10pts
No other upgrades are permitted
Special Rules:
Attack Dogs: the dogs count as a surveyor but for a second and third dog you may roll an extra D6 each for the detection range. Any friendly unit within 12” of the Provost Troop may then fire on any enemy infiltrators discovered. If the handler is killed the dogs run off and are counted as killed for VP purposes.
Military Police: the troop is a second line force so must deploy no further than 6” from the table edge.

i see them as an ideal anti infiltrator/deep strike squad. set them to guard a basilisk or important objective and they will be fine.
