3D paper terrain for Space Crusade

Hello guys,

first of, let me say its 5am, so i apologies in advance if i dont make sense or write in Engrlish.
Here's a photo of something I've been working on:

So far I've design the meshes for the doors and some of the walls and this shows the results of the test builds. Its gunna look better once it has textures, which I've also been working on. I'll update soon with more photos, hopefully textured builds.

I've been thinking about the maps, and i want to make the walls thick (at least 1/4") to make them feel "real". i made a bit of 3d paper terrain before for star wars miniatures, and the paper thin walls looked cheap and often would warp. This is  of Hoth, with the power generators in the background and the building representing Echo base.

Getting back to space crusade, 1 major problem with using games workshop miniatures is that the mini almost always is larger than its base, meaning that if a character is standing right next to a wall, the protruding weapons and other details force the base to not sit neatly in its square, especially with multiple adjacent units.

The solution, move the walls into the middle of the next square, giving the mini 1/4" to 1/2" of breathing room. the down side is that this increases the board size by a few inches and stretches out the map as all he walls are not effectively 1" thick.

Regards
Ren.

Re: 3D paper terrain

I've been building paper terrain with these.

It's nice and chunk but the doors are pain in the arse. I like your doorways better.

Looking good

Re: 3D paper terrain

Those are nice! Could you post some photos of what you've built so far? Whats 3D terrain like to play on? Does it make the game a bit more real or does it just get in the way? How do the doors work? I've made mine so that you grab the yellow stripy bit and pull the door out of the door way.

Re: 3D paper terrain

This post was updated on .
The wall sections come in single double or x4 lengths, these come in 3 different texture styles. You then get floors you cut to size. The doors are 2 piece sets that you either glue the door in or not the site has a free door sample on it.

I've attached the individual walls pieces onto magnetic sheets. I then glue the floors onto A4 sheets of stainless steel. I then build any shape terrain I want.

Here's my bits so far which make a nice 2 A4 sheet building.

I currently use them with standard wargames as terrain.  My idea is to have enough to fill a 6 foot by 8 foot gaming table we use. I want pto run the ultimate RPG game.

I also have the fantasy equivalent set. Takes alot of ink and time to build.

Spectacular idea.

I'm loving the doors and ice bits.  Really nice work.

I find 3D stuff very fiddly.

I've been thinking about employing magnetic paper with my own designs, but I'm sticking to an office-materials-only approach for now i.e. inkjet printers + paper and scissors, so that I don't lose sight of how the majority of customers will use my plans (apart from foam-card - many people seem to insist on using foam-card ...).

But Vamper, how do you weigh your own models down? Or do you glue them all to the floor map?

Great stuff.
